Dear all,

Eneko Agirre and Arantxa Otegi have prepared a short report for PATHS
setting out recommendations on the use of open source software for the
automatic enrichment of Digital Library content.

PATHS has been using text processing software to enable functionality in its
prototype <http://www.paths-project.eu/eng/Prototype> system specifically
for:

● intra-collection links

● background links

● ontology extension

The aim of PATHS has been to investigate the use software to enable these
functionalities and much of the software used has been is in-house and
relatively complex. Releasing open source software for these tasks was not
within the scope of our work plan and would be a major undertaking. However
there are projects which are releasing open source software and so the goal
of this document is to present an overall set of recommendations for the
automatic enrichment of Digital Library content using such software.

There are projects within the Europeana Network (for example LoCloud
http://www.locloud.eu/), where servers for automatic content enrichment of
digital library items are being set up. This report is intended to be
useful for such projects and for third-parties who would like to offer
enrichment services. The report provides an overall view of the software
required and the programming effort involved.

The recommendations are available on the PATHS website:
http://www.paths-project.eu/eng/Resources/Recommendations_automatic_-enrichm
ent_of_DL_content_using_open_source_software.

For more information about the content processing and metadata enrichment
work in PATHS, please see D2.1 and D2.2 on
http://www.paths-project.eu/eng/Resources.

With best regards,

Kate
